The true worth of a man
In the town of Avanti, lived a wealthy man named Manik Gupta. He carefully cultivated the image of being a devout and righteous person, eager to be praised for his piety and religious observances. Yet, behind this façade, he was notoriously miserly. Despite his immense wealth, he never opened his heart or his purse to help those in distress.
One day, as Manik Gupta descended the steps of the temple pond to wash his hands, feet, and face before offering his prayers, he slipped on the moss-covered steps and fell into the deep water. Unable to swim, he struggled desperately for his life. A crowd quickly gathered around the pond, but no one had the courage to jump in and rescue him.
Just then, a wandering monk who had been sitting in the nearby temple pavilion noticed the commotion. Without a moment's hesitation, he leapt into the pond, swam to the drowning man, and safely brought him back to the shore.
After regaining consciousness, Manik Gupta learned that the monk had saved his life. He reached into the pocket of the cloth bag he had left on the bank and took out his money pouch. Everyone present knew that it contained several gold coins as well as silver rupees. Yet, after carefully searching through the coins, he picked out a single quarter-rupee coin and handed it to the monk as a reward.
The onlookers were outraged. They could not believe that a man whose life had just been saved would show such astonishing stinginess. Furious at his ingratitude, some of them even moved to push him back into the pond.
The monk immediately stopped them and, with a gentle smile, said,
"Why are you so angry? He has given me exactly what he is worth. Poor fellow, let him be."
The crowd fell silent. The monk's words conveyed a profound truth far deeper than any rebuke.
Moral
A person's greatness is not measured by the wealth they possess but by the generosity they practice. Wealth without gratitude or compassion diminishes its owner, while a generous heart alone reveals a person's true worth.
